Lake Leota
This is Lake Leota.
The first dam was built in the late 1890s. Before the dam was made, Lake Leota was known as the mill pond. In 1875, Lake Leota got its name.
Evansville Review for the city park
August, 1922 the Evansville city council got $10,359.50 to purchase land.
The city and the railroad agreed to have the lake two feet lower than the old one. In February 1923, a blue print and plans were presented to the City Council.
The plan... The plan was to dig an eighteen-inch hole in the old dam. The work was done by July first. The cement work was done in August. The cement work was done in the first week of September, 1923.
For the filling of the lake there was a contest that 400 people entered. To guess the correct number of hours and minutes it took for water to run over the spillway. There was a “large cash prize”.
The time to fill the lake was 17 days, 7 hours and 10 minutes.

Brick road...
Before
main street in 1910.
People complained about the dirt roads. Evansville’s promoters wanted good roads to make Evansville look nice. People who had automobiles demanded good paved roads. Evansville couldn’t afford paved roads. Some residents decided to experiment on the road, to improve it. They came up with new techniques for streets. In 1912 the City Council purchased a sprinkling machine to oil the dirt roads. Henry Pease protested, and hired a Milwaukee attorney and claimed
that it was illegal. People who lived out on Fourth Street changed their minds about
the brick road. The road began in late July 1914, and ended sometime in 1914. Then
a small part got destroyed. Then the road was fixed in September 29, 2007.
